Case Study: Custom Toy Boxes and Risers

Custom Toy Boxes and Risers

Every so often, we get called upon to perform a custom millwork job that allows us to both flex our creative muscles and help a worthwhile institution. A project for The KIPP Academy, a charter school for under-resourced children in Columbus, was one such project.

We’ve been working with Ed DenHaan, a project manager, for many years. He needed some custom work done, built to an architect’s specifications, for the activity room in the school. Since much of the project was being funded by private donor money, he needed assurance that the workmanship would be of the highest caliber. That’s why Rockwood got the call.

We coordinated and custom-built several rolling toy boxes on casters utilizing dovetail construction. We also built several risers, on which children could sit during special events and activities. The most interesting part of the design, though, is the way that each riser has an opening in the back. The hollow space within can house two of these rolling toy boxes, allowing all the pieces to take up less space in the activity room.
